AHSAA and The Jason Foundation Statewide Suicide Prevention Training
Suicide is the THIRD leading cause of death
for youth ages 15-24.
When asked who they would turn to for help with a friend, students most often said an educator, specifically a COACH.
In November 2007, the Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA) Board of Directors unanimously approved an affiliation with The Jason Foundation, Inc. Out of this unique partnership comes the nation's first statewide provision which allows an athletic association's membership to receive The Jason Foundation's youth suicide prevention training, which is offered at no cost.
Suicide is the third leading cause of death for youth ages 15 to 24 and the fourth for ages 10 to 14 nationally. According to the 2005 Youth Risk Behavioral Survey in Alabama, over one out of every seven Alabama youth reported they had made a plan to commit suicide. Almost all young people who are contemplating suicide show clear signs before the attempt. If we are trained to recognize these signs, we have a good chance to identify and help at-risk youth.
The Jason Foundation's staff development program is not intended to make you an expert in youth suicide. The purpose of this training is to help bring an awareness of the impact of youth suicide on our communities and to provide you with the information, tools and resources that will help you identify at-risk youth and assist in finding them help.
