How to respond to someone who may be experiencing suicidal thoughts

When you recognize the behavior associated with suicidal thoughts in a young person it is important to know how to respond. The simple acronym LIFE can help you remember what to do.

L - Represents the very first thing you must do … LISTEN. It sounds simple but listening without criticism or commentary can be very difficult when you are emotionally involved or worried about a young person's welfare.

I - Represents the second thing you need to do. INSIST ON HONESTY. Encourage the person to tell you what is really on his/her mind and be honest in your response to what they have to say.

F - Represents the third step you need to take to help a young person who is considering suicide, talk about FEELINGS. Have an open and honest discussion about the feelings you both are experiencing.

E - The last step is to EXTEND A HELPING HAND. Take the young person to get professional help. Solving a problem or getting the help you need is always easier with the supportive presence of someone who cares.
