Educational Programs and Resources / Programs
If someone were having a heart attack you would call 911. But if a friend told you they were thinking about suicide, what would you do? The Jason Foundation is working to end the “Silent Epidemic” of youth suicide through educational programs and services. JFI provides a range of programs for parents, youth and teachers/youth workers. Our goal is to equip people with the information, tools and resources to possibly recognize an at risk youth and know how to help. The following is a brief description of the JFI programs available at no cost to the consumer.
“A Promise for Tomorrow”. A school-based curriculum unit of study suitable for grades 7 through 12. It can be taught as a stand- alone program or as an objective within another discipline like health and wellness. The students are given information about the problem of youth suicide and strategies to recognize and help a friend who may be at risk. The underlying lesson is that a responsible adult must be told of the concerns so that appropriate help can be found. The program contains easy to follow lesson plans, a discussion DVD and activities for students.

Parent Programs. Parent seminars can be presented by JFI staff in areas near a Jason Foundation office. These seminars are designed to give parents tools and resources needed to recognize possible problems with their children and know how to respond. Also, The Jason Foundation provides a Parent Resource Program (PRP) that can be accessed from this website. A PRP icon is located on the homepage and will take parents to a link that will inform parents if they have a concern about their child or others. Signs of Concern, elevated risk factors, resources and other information are included for parents to educate themselves about youth suicide and know how to help their child.
Staff Development training for educators and youth workers. The students are encouraged to get a responsible adult involved if they have a concern. Since there is no way of knowing who that student might choose, everyone should be aware of the problem of youth suicide and know what to do if a student comes to them. The Jason Foundation staff training seminars are available in two main formats. The training can be accessed from this website with login information. This format is designed for individual study. Also, a group presentation format is available upon request. This is a DVD that can be shown to a group. It comes with facilitator information that is easy to follow and implement. In both formats, participants will learn about the scope and magnitude of the problem, recognize signs of concern and learn some elevated risk factors. In addition, a discussion of possible resources is included.
