Suicide is the THIRD leading cause of death
for youth ages 15-24.
When asked who they would turn to for help with a friend, students most often said an educator, specifically a COACH.
On March 12, 2008, The Tennessee Secondary School Athletic
Association’s (TSSAA) Board of Control voted unanimously
to partner with The Jason Foundation, Inc. (JFI). The
purpose of this affiliation is to allow all TSSAA members
to have access to The Jason Foundation’s online youth
suicide prevention training at no cost to them.
Ronnie Carter, Executive Director of TSSAA, said, "We feel
very fortunate to be involved with the Jason Foundation.
The challenge of helping to educate both students and
adults regarding teen suicide is critical, and we look
forward to being a part of this great journey.”
Suicide is the third leading cause of death for youth ages
15 to 24 and the fourth for ages 10 to 14 nationally.
According to the 2007 Youth Risk Behavioral Survey in
Tennessee, over one out of every 10 Tennessee youth
reported they had made a plan to commit suicide. Almost
all young people who are contemplating suicide show clear
signs before the attempt. Those who have been trained to
recognize the warning signs of suicide are better prepared
to identify and help at-risk youth.
The Jason Foundation’s staff development program is not
intended to make anyone an expert or counselor in youth
suicide. The purpose of this training is to help bring an
awareness of the impact of youth suicide on our
communities and to provide the information, tools and
resources that will help you to identify at-risk youth and
assist in finding them help.
