On July 3, 2008, SB 1378 passed the California General Assembly and was sent to Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger for signature.

On July 18, 2008, Governor Schwarzenegger signed SB 1378, also known as The Jason Flatt Act of 2008, into law. California became the third state to pass The Jason Flatt Act.

Major components of the legislation are:

  1. This bill authorizes a school district that receives a professional development block grant to offer to each of its teachers two hours of staff development in the prevention of suicide.
  2. A district receiving such funds may expend a portion of those funds for two hours of youth suicide prevention training.
  3. The training provided under this section may not exceed two hours.
  4. The training may occur during a regularly scheduled in-service training day.
